From the almighty Wikipedia :
"A navy shower (or "sea shower") is a method of showering that allows for significant conservation of water and energy by turning off water during the "middle" portion. An initial thirty seconds or so are used to get wet, followed by soap and lather, which is then rinsed off in a minute or less. The total time for the water being on is typically under two minutes.
Navy showers originated on naval ships, where supplies of fresh water were often scarce. Using this method, crew members were able to stay clean, while conserving their limited water supply. The idea has been adopted by many people who wish to conserve water and the energy needed to heat the water, for both environmental and economic reasons. Maritime cruisers often take navy showers when they are not in a port with easy access to fresh water. A ten-minute shower takes as much as 230 L (60 U.S. gallons) of water, while a navy shower usually takes as little as 11 L (3 U.S. gallons); one person can save 56,000 L (15,000 U.S. gallons) per year."

Happy Birthday ya old fart.
Firstly, 29? You look like 23 or 24. Secondly, I promise to do a navy shower tomorrow.
thanks
Yeah, you look way younger than 29. I can't believe you're older than me.
I wont wish you happy birthday cuz I know how it feels like to get old, it fucking sucks.
So happy none birthday and que cera cera..
Awesome! Sharing the same birthday month (also turning the same age) with one of my favorite YouTube atheists. I've been taking sea showers since January and haven't looked back. Happy Birthday Cristina! :)
Cats definitely rule, and they know it!
Navy showers are not a problem as I already do so in order to conserve water. Now if only more people in the U.S. would stop wasting water, electricity, etc, we would not have many of the environmental and energy cost issues which plague our country...do not get me started on all of that though.
In any event have a Happy Birthday, and many more.
Sorry Criss, but Navy showers are the face of evil. Showertime = escapism time. The shower is the asylum. The shower doesn't judge you or expect you to be on time or to hand anything in by the time you're done, and if the water isn't constantly running while you're in the shower, well then the shower is a hollow, empty shell of its former self. It becomes a mundane activity without the non-stop water flow. This has been scientifically proven at the university of Oxford during a totally unrelated experiment.
I don't even wanna think about it for another second it's so disturbing. It's also reason # 573928 why no one should ever join the Navy.
Navy shower in cold water! Happy b-day!
Happy Birthday!
Navy Showers for a week. A hot shower replaced my coffee addiction as a morning ritual so I won’t give it up permanently, but I will try navy showers for a week… now where did I put the damn coffee machine.

Spreading the "navy shower" word.
happy birthday. you certainly do not look like 29. i guessed you where about 20-21. I will take navy showers for a month from now on. after that im on a ship again and then i take normal showers because it can be quite frustrating to be on board a ship 24/7 for 3 months at a time with the same 13 people around you every day. no place to go but the shower thats about the only time you are on your own so i always shower normal on board.
and i have a comment about the wiki article namely : they wouldn't have to do navy showers in the navy. ships these days have big installations for making fresh water out of seawater. navy vessels from the dutch navy (i was told by a buddy of mine who is in the navy) sometimes have a capacity to make 1.000.000L of fresh water a day divide that by 160 people (crew on board dutch frigates) is 6.250L a day (for english speaking people: in the Netherlands we use a decimal , instead of a decimal . so in english it would be 1,000,000L a day and 6,250L per person per day.)
"Don't wet yourself in the shower, kids!"
But, but, but... It's like peeing at the pool, no-one will ever know! (Damn you, thought police)
Happy Birthday! You look so good, not that 29 is really old. I just always thought you were like 23.
And thanks for saying what a navy shower is. It's a good idea. Especially because my showers are so long that by the time I'm done there's no hot water left.

Why haven't I heard of navy showers before? xD My family has a proud navy history and no one bothered telling me about this. Gahhhh!!
I know what I'm going to do from now on. Thanks, Criss :)
I didn't have heated water in one place I lived for about 5 years. That limits the amount of water and showers you use and take, because it's COLD! I now take hot baths because they are more relaxing. I know it's uses tons of water, but I like what I like. I'm worth it.
I'm a bit late but happy birthday anyway!
Keep doing a good job! And get more fun from doing it!
29?!?!?! You look no older than 23, 24, tops. Wish you had a happy birthday. And don't worry, I won't have a shower for a week :)
A tad late but... have an amazing amazing amazing day!!!! La Multi Ani! (:
Hi Cristina, Happr Birthday!
We share the same birthday, only I am 16 years older.
If you have been having navy showers for years then I am sure that you have more than made up for the water you used in washing your clothes.
I am surprised that water conservation is an issue in Romania. I thought you would always have amples supplies because your winters are much colder and you have higher snow & rain fall.
@Juliehbearrr
read my last post. that`s probably why.
Happy birthday Cristina~ Navy shower ok-ed.
omg I'm much younger than you? thought we were about the same age... I must feel old ;-) anyway, I will take navy showers from now on too.
oh yeah and by the way, drinking 2 liters of water per day isn't only average but also healthy, you should'nt drink less even though many people do... I do understand a bad conscience if one showers twice a day, but drinking too much? NEVER!!! ;-)
Great idea. Goes along w/ something else I do, which is to fill up a small cup for rinsing your mouth when brushing your teeth, rather than leaving the sink on during the entire mouth cleaning period. Of course Navy shower saves more water, and money if you pay for water, but the mouth rinsing procedure saves too. ;-)
every person with decent hygene showers twice a day.
2L water a day is below normal.
cheer up in next post pls
¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪.. Happy Birthday Cris! .. ♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸ :)
This inspired me to take a Rockefeller shower.
I'm thinking 30 or 40 mins tops.
I never knew there was a such thing as Navy showers, but apparently that's what I've been doing for a while now lol. :)
I did navy shower today.
Just so you know :P ... I have been taking navy showers all my life without evan knowing it :)) ... and by that I mean I didn't know it was called that or that most people don't turn off the water. :D
Oh and 29 ??? really ... really really ? I would have sayd 23 TOPS. :* ... de ce n-oi fi scris eu in romana ? :-s
Enlisted sailors also used to have to share the water they navy showered in. Or in the old Navy (pre WWII) enlisted ranks didn't get fresh water to bathe in and could use sea water, if they felt the need. It was called "dipping the bucket" because that's pretty much what they did, dropping a bucket on a line over the side and then washing/rinsing with that. Fels Naptha soap was preferred to wash with because it would lather with sea water, which most soap won't.
"The thing you do when you dream about being rich and being famous and being pretty"
Well, rich? No. Famous? You have over 70 000 subscribers, and I would wager at least twice times that would recognize you if you met. Your most popular vid has over 1.3 million hits. That would make you more famous than most professional musicians or even parliamentarians in your country.
And pretty? Well..... ;-)
I want to give her golden showers ..
Also, sometimes I can't tell whether she is trying to scam (by acting so sad) or if she is honest
I don't care, I like it
However, if you are so simple that picking furniture makes you happy, I would rock your world .. baby
You're 29? WOW! I felt so old and alone and useless before I heard that, but now I only feel alone and useless! Thank you, Cristina! XD
Why SHOULDN'T you wet yourself in the shower? Think how much water you would save by not using the toilet.
Also, water wastage technically is not an environmental issue. The only problem water wastage causes is not having water later on for humanitarian reasons, if anything. Even if every dam in the world ran dry, the rainforests, the climate, the oceans, and everything else would be fine. In fact, the environment was in perfect shape before the first dam was ever built. Sorry, pet peeve of mine when people make this error.
Happy Belated Birthday!
Navy shower is not in my character but I have done it before. It is not as relaxing as 15 to 20 minute showers.
BTW, u went to the beach. Does that mean you live in Constanta?
I like the idea of a Navy Shower but I fail to grasp the concept textually. I am more of a visual learner. Could you kindly show a demonstration video for those who would like further insight into this type of shower.
Very much appreciated.
I take a shower but once a week. I dont drink water. Only whiskey and beer. As you can imagine I smell lovely.
happy birthday cristina, and FYI I am in the Navy so i am VERY familiar with navy showers even though i have never been on a ship. within the navy, even in cities where water isn't scarce, the navy take navy showers lol. (U. S. Navy
wow i just left this on my screen and came back to it after drinking a bunch of beer.... i CAN'T BELIEVE you have heard of navy showers!!!! i have been yelled at and more over damn stupid ass navy showers... especially when it doesn't even matter like at a barracks in california!! lol
Even if it's lame, Happy Belated Birthday :)
I have been taking Navy showers for about 2 yrs, especially as where I live (Melbourne, Australia) there has been relatively severe water restrictions. Recently some restrictions have been lifted, but I am used to taking a shower this way. It is sometimes hard to do on cold days but I found that the lather bubbles act as insulation so you stay fairly warm while you wash.
It's so funny, I watched this, your birthday video, today, which is my birthday. I'm 25, so a little younger.
Happy Days to Us!!!
...(lol puke)
The showers you take don't sound like they take so much water. I wouldn't feel so guilty about them based on your navy method. If they bother you you can always experiment with doing something else, like just washing the face in the evening if that one is easier to cut out.
But you don't even have to cut them out necessarily unless you want to. Think of the many worse ways you could wake up/relax at night (e.g. a snort of coke, a bottle of gin)..those ways are worse.
Last week I have taken a navy shower every day. Happy late Birthday.
Happy ridiculously late Birthday - even if you don't like it :)
I'll be trying out the navy shower next time I have a shower and, anyway, based on Wikipedia's description, you probably use less water than an average person even with your two showers
I have been loving your take on the world ever since I saw you on Q&A (in Australia); I wish I could've seen you at Think Inc.
I'm an enivromentalist so I already have a water conserving shower head but I have never heard of this navy shower. After looking it up I have decided that I am going to give it a shot. Thank you for the advice.
Got any housing co-ops where you are?
Saw a prog on Demand 5 (Brit TV channel 5) 3 part series fly on the wall documentary about life on a Royal Navy Nuclear Submarine. Think 2 minutes would have been considered 'hollywooding' and the Executive Officer (second in command) wished showers limited to a minute I think. While water is not limited as such on a nuclear sub, they need to limit the amount of waste water for security reasons or something like that. My shower is bust so I take a bath usually daily. When I get my shower working I will do some hollywooding for you. Many happy hippy returns.
I too would like to have a place of my own.Basically all set up for a co-op to share with my soulmate.Having the place like a home/business/office/company headquarters.SUCCESSION FOR PROGRESSION.
